The future of Maple Grove Hospital
Maple Grove Hospital is currently rated a Level IV trauma center. That means the most serious traumas including major car accidents, heart attacks requiring emergency catheterization, strokes needing advanced intervention still get routed to North Memorial’s Robbinsdale campus, roughly 20 minutes away. Currently, no plans are in the works to change that! For families in Evanswood and across Maple Grove, those minutes matter.
This isn’t abstract to me. My mother is 90 years old. When she needs emergency cardiac or trauma care, “the ambulance has to drive to Robbinsdale” isn’t a policy detail — it’s the difference between minutes and miles that shouldn’t exist for a city our size.
Frankly speaking, I bring more than a resident’s concern to this issue. I served as a medic/EMT and spent time doing search and rescue in Manhattan on 9/11 and in the years that followed. I understand, firsthand, how critical rapid access to trauma and cardiac care is — and how a community’s outcomes are shaped by the infrastructure it invests in before the emergency happens.
Maple Grove has grown into one of the fastest-growing cities in Minnesota. Our population exceeds 70,000 residents currently. Our hospital’s trauma designation and cardiac catheterization capabilities haven’t kept pace! That has to change.
As your city councilmember, I will:
- Push North Memorial and any future ownership to invest in upgrading Maple Grove Hospital’s trauma designation toward Level I or Level II
- Advocate for a full cardiac catheterization (cath) lab on-site, so heart attack patients don’t lose critical time being transferred to North Memorial in Robbinsdale. A current sad state of affairs.
- Work with county and state health officials to make the case that Maple Grove’s population growth justifies this investment now, not later
Our residents, including our seniors, deserve emergency care that matches the size and pace of our Maple Grove community. This has to change now!
